Inspiring students to act adventurously

22 Jul 2025

A unique initiative is improving the mental health and wellbeing of medical students at 天美传媒 National University (ANU). This novel idea originated with a long-standing donor to the University, who wanted to encourage students studying towards a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery to pursue their joys and passions outside of the academic demands of their degree.

鈥淭he intention is to encourage some curiosity, lateral thinking and 鈥榙oing鈥. To be supported in participating in activities outside of the academic realm 鈥 something I would have welcomed as a student paying my own way through university and incidentally also supported with help from scholarships.鈥

ANU donor

The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous but is eager to share their story, collaborated with the ANU School of Medicine and Psychology (SMP) to establish the Medical Venture Fund, inspiring students to learn new skills and 鈥渧enture鈥 beyond their set curriculum. Students who demonstrate enthusiasm and a curious and adventurous spirit, regardless of academic merit or achievements, can seek support for activities that foster their self-development.

Unsurprisingly, the initiative has proven extremely popular and is regarded by students as a valuable, transformational opportunity that complements their studies. Students have explored language classes in German, Dutch, and Auslan, swimming lessons, scuba diving, and ukulele lessons, as well as

, who used the opportunity provided by the donor to take cello lessons, noted the value of her experience beyond the learning of a new skill.

鈥淥ne of the most valuable parts of the experience has been overcoming fear associated with failure. It has also been an amazing form of stress relief and avenue for self-expression,鈥 says Kiran.

The donor had originally envisioned the Medical Venture Fund as a legacy gift to ANU enacted through his estate.

鈥淵ears ago, when I had my will drafted, I chose to leave donations to groups which had been important in making me what I became. ANU was receptive to my gift and my unique idea,鈥 says the donor.

As he 鈥渒ept on living and getting older,鈥 the regular gifts the donor made to the Fund continued to grow to the point where SMP suggested establishing an endowment to enact the Medical Venture Fund during his lifetime. This gave him the opportunity to experience the positive impact of his philanthropy now, while also providing reassurance that his bequest will ensure his initiative continues to benefit future generations of students undertaking their medical studies at ANU.

鈥淚 want the participants to gain appreciation for altruism and generosity. To be excited to be able to afford to do something they really want to do. This will hopefully develop a greater sense of self-worth and esteem, which will also have the effect of being a positive influence on their studies.鈥

The donor admits to having an adventurous spirit and taking part in a variety of university activities, with his curiosity leading him to explore all sorts of byways throughout his life and career.

His advice to students is to, 鈥淒evelop and maintain a high level of all-round personal healthy wellbeing 鈥 physical, intellectual, mental, spiritual and social 鈥 and promote it to all whom you will contact in life, especially your patients, family and friends.鈥

The donor鈥檚 gift in his will to ANU will further grow the Medical Venture Fund and enable it to enrich the lives of even more students.
